On Friday night, the Hollywood studio Universal Pictures released the official trailer, which showcases the film’s breathtaking and expertly choreographed pursuit and combat scenes. This is also the film’s first directing effort for Patel.
Inspired by the story of Lord Hanuman, Monkey Man is a Mumbai-based film that stars Lionel Stander as a man seeking revenge on the unscrupulous leaders who killed his mother and still victimize the weak and impoverished on a systemic basis.

Dev Patel portrays Kid, a nameless young guy who makes a pitiful living in an underground fight club where he gets brutally pummeled by more well-known fighters every night while donning a gorilla mask.
Kid finds a means to sneak into the city’s evil elite’s enclave after years of holding his anger inside. His hands, which seem to have scarred him inexplicably, unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to exact revenge on the individuals who stole everything from him as his childhood trauma boils over, according to the official logline.
Along with Sharlto Copley, the film also stars Adithi Kalkunte, Pitobash, Makarand Deshpande, Sikandar Kher, Vipin Sharma, and Ashwini Kalsekar. In the teaser, Patel fights in a ring, sparring with Kher by hand and taking on other crooks in a manner that is similar to the retired assassin played by Keanu Reeves in the four John Wick films.
Coincidentally, Monkey Man is also supported by Thunder Road Films, one of the makers of the John Wick series. Patel, Jomon Thomas, Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele, Ian Cooper, Win Rosenfeld, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal are among the producers of the movie.
Patel used his own story as the basis for the film. Along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee, he wrote the screenplay. In the trailer, a voiceover declares, “One small ember can burn down everything,” as Dev viciously smashes his opponents, unleashing all of his pent-up wrath. Written by Dev in association with Paul Angunawela and John Collee, Monkey Man features action and chase scenes reminiscent of Keanu Reeves’s John Wick films.
In the teaser, Dev states, “In this city, the rich don’t see us as people,” and then cuts to scenes in which he is willing to work any menial job in order to make ends meet. Soon after, he gets a job as a server at a club where Sobhita performs as a stripper. She cautions him about the complexities of working in a strip club and advises him not to apply for the position if he is unable to handle them.
Dev’s first film as a filmmaker is Monkey Man. Many worldwide celebrities are also featured in it, including Makarand Deshpande, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Ashwini Kalsekar, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, and Sharlto Copley.
