History of International Women's Day
The United Nations declared March 8 to be International Women’s Day in 1975. On March 19, 1911, though, it was observed for the first time in the US and a few other European nations. The 1908 labor movement gave rise to the concept of International Women’s Day, when a large number of female garment workers marched through the streets of New York City to demand voting rights, shorter workweeks, and higher pay.
Leading the charge was the Socialist Party of America. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) claims that labor movements in North America and Europe during the 20th century gave rise to International Women’s Day. In remembrance of the 1908 garment, the United States celebrated the inaugural National Woman’s Day on February 28, 1909.
Women demonstrated against unfavorable working conditions during the New York workers’ strike. The first international agreement to uphold the principle of gender equality was the United Nations Charter, which was adopted in 1945. Afterwards, the UN celebrated its first official International Women’s Day on March 8, 1975, which fell during International Women’s Year.
International Women’s Day gained widespread recognition after the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1977. Member nations were urged to declare March 8 as an official UN holiday in support of women’s rights and global peace.

Celebrations of international womens day :
On International Women’s Day, people show their support for women in their life by doing kind deeds. You can watch their favorite movies, make handmade gifts, give them books authored by female authors, take them to their favorite restaurant for dinner, educate yourself on women’s rights and gender equality, and much more.
Worldwide, people will be commemorating International Women’s Day (IWD) this week. Numerous well-deserved pieces on women who have improved the world—not just for themselves and other women, but for everyone—will be published. I am proud of and appreciative of all these women—from Marie Curie to Ann Richards, from Florence Nightingale to Eleanor Roosevelt to Ruth Bader Ginsburg—and so many more for their bravery, perseverance, and achievements.
Nearer to Home Heroines
In the meantime, I invite each and every one of us to think back on the strong, compassionate women who have changed our lives—those who have influenced you directly and helped shape who you are now.
I consider myself extremely lucky to have had amazing female ancestors, whose lives inspire me daily to follow in their footsteps:
Mina Jensen was my paternal great-grandmother. In order to take advantage of the government’s land grant policy, which allowed people to own as much land as they could work, she and her husband, Nils Andersen, who were both Danish immigrants, bought a horse and cart and drove it from upstate New York to Nebraska when she was twenty years old and expecting her first child, my grandfather. They established a farm and brought up their five kids there.
